Gonna be some changes made

[livejournal.com profile] svendra and [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle are running what looks to be a bloody marvelous challenge: the femslash cliche challenge. Seriously, has this never been done before? SERIOUSLY??? Because now I really want a satirical, over the top and yet strangely sexy, undeniably arousing, FEMALE SLASH FIC. I leave the cliche up to you, but I'm thinking Aliens Made Them Do It and then got bored with how much foreplay was involved and went away whilst our heroes (I dislike the word heroine, sue me) get on with it and enjoy themselves. [livejournal.com profile] alien_altars, people. I hope to see you all there.

I was outside today doing plumbing work (outdoor) when I wasn't sorting out a problem with the bracing in the wall frames and covering up a little oops with a failure to sink the bolts properly into the concrete foundation (there really isn't a way to go back and fix that.) And that's after I sewed the other arm on my Mother's wing chair that she wants a slipcover for (*patterned*, God help me, again. She never makes it easy) and found half a dozen apartments I wouldn't mind living in from Craig's List in the New City.

So you may imagine why my hands are tired I thought I had nothing of note to post.

But I was wrong, because I have this cheeky new browser! Yay! That is much more compatible with my del.icio.us account! YAY! So I've been marking things with the tag ReadMe and then going back to change that to RecMe (are you guys interested in this? I know I have librarians on this list, and so, I *organize* and assume you care.) Right, so you are so more than welcome to peruse the del.icio.us account (me=minxy) but be aware that it's a hold-all place for things I intend to read, and are not necessarily recommendations. There is a link in my sidebar now, though, because it's working pretty well for me.

Also, I would just like to say that despite the subject line, I am *so into* Mary J. Blige and Amy Winehouse at the moment. I believe I can blame my flist for pointing me to Amy Winehouse.

But yes! RECS! There are 10 in my RecMe tag! Because that's what I do, and I have a sneaking suspicion that while I'm technically writing and stuff, the fact that my mostest trustedest betas are having wonky health and head issues means... you may or may not see those for a while. And if you do see them? It might just be smoke and mirrors for the fact that I'm all distracted by the imminent move.

But, recs:

[livejournal.com profile] synecdochic writes my very favorite versions of Cameron and Sam ever: in the long slow friendship with amazing benefits, where Sam is adopted into Cam's family since forever and he wants to take care of her and is the only, ONLY one she doesn't hold at a distance... this is Cam dropping by like the old friend he is, to find Sam in the recovery aftermath of a mission she absolutely can't tell him anything about, and it's so heartbreakingly Everything It Should Be. Comfort(able), Sam/Cameron, ca: S1? R rated.

[livejournal.com profile] princess_bunny wrote a cracky, hilarious John/Rodney that is marvelously funny and flamingly gay. Reminded me a little of Dr. Jackson's Diary in the 'really not your canon characters, but we love their queeny ways anyway' way. And also, you just have to overlook how clearly *nothing ever gets done* in Atlantis, but people are fine with it. Glitter and Lube. NC-17, cracky.

For your genderswitch reading needs (there were a remarkable number of remarkable genderswitch stories lately,) I suggest you begin with [livejournal.com profile] spike21's Teyla: Maybe Oracle, gen, genderswitch. Really interesting contrast in losses and gains and a remarkable Teyla voice. (Also, if you read the next fic, her reaction is so interesting compared with John's.)

Chase that with John and Rodney, in a series of changes that takes them so far into each other that heterosexual identification becomes so very irrelevant and limited. Remarkable femslash, but it's the journey towards wanting each other that made the story for me. Always Should Be Someone You Really Love (links to part 2, this series is complete), NC-17, John/Rodney, genderswitch and discussions of het, slash, femslash and use of toys. It runs the gamut, really well. From [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings. Also, Ronon and Teyla are distinct presences.

from [livejournal.com profile] princessofg, a Rising tag for Jack and Daniel, a first time and a happy: Evenings of Barbeque, Evenings of Chess. It's PG, Jack/Daniel, but a marvelous baby-steps/talking/just-so-we're-clear way to approach changing a friendship.

This is (sadly) a WIP, which I didn't know before I started reading, but I need to rec it anyway, even as a place holder. It is marvelous writing and extraordinary Daniel voice, complete with philosophical asides, pettiness, liguistics, and random lateral jumps in thinking. The Continuation of Life (Not Quite San Souci). Crossover with SGA, slash, from [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon. She promises to finish soon, so I'll rerec (OMG wips kill me.)

While we're on crossovers, this is John on Earth, not quite sure why he's accepted an invitation to road-trip with SG-1. Loved minervacat's deft understanding (and clear love) of basketball, how John and Cameron bond so easily over the game, and how it becomes a platform for seeing how many other ways they can connect. Multileveled growing connection is seven levels of awesome: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat's Steal The Thunder From The Sky, John/Cameron, NC-17, SG-1 with John Sheppard.

Lessee, what else I got? (I'm loving the timing of starting this whole del.icio.us rediscovery thing just when my comment notifications are on the fritz).

Oh, a series tag from [livejournal.com profile] niamaea, and one of those gen fics with a partnership *also*. This is Sam and Teal'c POV (the Teal'c is particularly lovely) as the team is given a chance to live and die quietly, no fanfare. Cameron/Sam in there, but it really is a nice little story about our heroes finding their own ways to live like normal people (or not, as the case may be). A Million Years Into the Sky, gen, Cam/Sam, PG, finalefic

Two S10 Jack ficlettes, one slash or Jack and Daniel friendship, and one pre- or post-het. The first is a drabble from [livejournal.com profile] teand: Half Crazy, PG and the second is a long, slow, gentle connection between people who loved and hurt each other once: Something Old, PG, Jack and Sara, in one of the most wonderful relationships our show ever gave us, from [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde.

For those of you who were involved in pimping me in to Supernatural, this section is for you (I can quit at any time I can quit at any time I can quit at any time I can quit at any time I can quit at any time.)

[livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope (in [livejournal.com profile] hopeful_fiction) wrote a fantastic Sam and Dean having a prank war related to laundry: socktacular socktacular. Gen, PG-13 or R (brothers fight dirty).

[livejournal.com profile] onelittlesleep wrote a lovely last trip before Sam went to school, and it's got great slightly-younger voices and topics and Dean learning about Sam in great ways. But I Never Could Sharpen No Blade, Quite the Way He Say. Gen, pre-series, PG.

And in conclusion, [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun is writing oodles of wonderful happy John/Rodney this... month I think? I don't know why, I just know it's consistently happymaking and possibly too much to rec individually, so we shall just fangirl Punk in general. *fangirls*

You're welcome! Thanks for the fic!

So I've been marking things with the tag ReadMe and then going back to change that to RecMe (are you guys interested in this? I know I have librarians on this list, and so, I *organize* and assume you care.)

Of course we care! Admittedly, as wonderful as del.icio.us is, it does need to work on being able to search more than one tag at a time. But that's me thinking like a librarian again!

I stupidly! volunteered to rec on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and am using it to collect possible fics for reccing. And intel on future holiday destinations too.

BTW - check the Alien Altars link, I don't think it's working properly...

Did you catch [livejournal.com profile] princessofg's latest superserkit OT3? Wonderful stuff!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It takes a little adjusting, the ol' del.icio.us account. When you find a reccer, you can search by tag and associated tag, can't you?

It's a slippery slope, reccing. You just watch yourself over with those crack_van people. They'll tell you you can try it once, but that's just how they get you hooked.

Have not seen prin's new OT3! Of the yay! Very much of the yay! I must catch up with my flist...

Thanks for the links to your del.icio.us account. I've got then opened in another window right now. :D ::squishes you::

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! Me too! *clutches ReadMe links closer* MINE!

I was a tagger for the newsletter for a long time, so absolutely everything slash got tagged. RL means I had to stop the newsletter helping, but I haven't gone back to sort through the old links so.... tread carefully, I'm still sorting out the kinks.

[identity profile] feather-autant.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinks? Is there a kinks tag? I like kinks! :D

Why is the weekend over? I don't wanna go to work! I wanna stay home and read! ::sulks::

I can quit at any time I can quit at any time I can quit at any time I can quit at any time I can quit at any time.

Sure you can.

The two stories that put me over the edge into SPN were probably [livejournal.com profile] nilchance and [livejournal.com profile] beanside's Of Bastard Saints (an AU spinning off "Devil's Trap" in which Dean gets amnesia and runs off, leaving a gravely-injured John and Sam to chase after him: it puts the emo in emo-porn) and [livejournal.com profile] big_pink's Red (which is everything you've heard about it, and more besides: plot, characterization, theme, and setting like whoa--Dean and Sam among the loggers and tree-huggers in the PNW, hunting a monster who has a taste for Dean).

Socktacular Socktacular is absolutely hysterical.

And lookit all this SG-1 fic I can't read until I finish watching S10! Argh!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think The Continuation of Life is the only one with spoilers for anything S10 in it. niamaea's is sort of her own version of how they retire, just based on current enemy (which was S9 too) and a happy ending. It got a little jossed by the end of S10, iirc.

Both the Jack S10 fics are completely Not Spoilery. In fact, maybe I should go back and label them S9...

I shall now go track down the two fics you mentioned at add them to my to read list.

Read everything by [livejournal.com profile] big_pink. Really. And then, if you're me, throw away your word-processor because you will never be as good as that in a hundred thousand years. ::tears hair::

[identity profile] bugchicklv.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey you! Lots of good recs here--have to wait to read some of them as I have a fic I need to finish writing first (actually 2). And LOL one of them is for the Femme cliche challenge! I figured it was time I just DID THE DAMN THING, you know? And a cliche is always so much easier to write, and usually doesn't require plot. YAY! (cause I couldn't come up with one)

Speaking of which, if you're up to it come this Friday, would you be my beta? It won't be terribly long (as it's PWP) and it's River/Kaylee. Please? *puppy eyes*

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, how can I refuse? Of course, of course. Just let me know what you're going for, what you're happy with, anything you're particularly worried about, and what kind of beta comments you'd like.

I'm always happy to enable something as wonderful as more femslash! Wheeee!!!!

YESSS!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This is all your fault. *whimper*

I should have a new apartment lined up by April 12th, and then we can pick a date for road trip, if you're up to it.

We'll need a really kick-ass soundtrack though, you realize that, right?

[identity profile] kres.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
SOUNDTRACK. YES.

Hm. Apart from the obvious stuff from SPN, which I guess would be nice to hear, I'm kinda cheesy: REM is my poison of choice, and I like to listen to Avril Lavigne's "Mobile" when I'm, uh, mobile. That's two examples off the top of my head. But I'm open to all and any possibilities. Except maybe hip-hop.

What equipment will you have? Shall we need CDs? Tapes? MP3s? Separate audio device with speakers?

And guhh, I so hope I'll be up to it by mid-April. I really do.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
We'll be in a rental van, so I suspect a radio and tape-deck will be our main options there. I have a mini-iPod with a FM station output and charger, thought, so if we load a buncha stuff on there we ought to be good for days and days of musics played through the radio.

I have very eclectic musical taste, even a little hip hop in my collection, but would you object to soul? R&B? Jazz? Blues? Bluegrass? Various and sundry alternative bands?

We could always call on the flists for assistance too.

[identity profile] kres.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall arm myself in (with? huh, English is confusing) lots of MP3s then.

I'm very much into the types of music you mentioned, because it's beautiful. And I guess it depends on the artist anyway, so we'll see.

How about mainstream? REM? U2?

Also, I must confess to a little hip-hop myself, in the form of a certain drop-dead gorgeous German singer (yes, GERMAN. WHAT?)

*is yay*

[identity profile] destina.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can quit at any time

*points and laughs* Yes, as I was updating my recs page this weekend - I think there are well over 150 recs there now, and I could easily have 250 more, if there were more hours in the day to code them - I remembered fondly when I thought the same thing. So I mock with love. *g* Nice to see you reccing onelittlesleep's classic, tho. (Can something be a classic in less than a year? If so, that's one.)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! More rec pages to troll! Um, I mean. Uh... at least I'm not writing...

I can't imagine being a front line reccer the same way for SPN; at the moment I'm rereccing things other people have recced somewhere. I doubt very much that I'll be throwing any titles around you haven't seen, but I say that very much aware that it was never my intention to more than casually rec in Stargate either.

Oh God. I'm doomed. I suppose it would be silly to cling to you like a life preserver?

(classics are good. It never hurts to start with classics. Even ones that are only a year old.)

Check [livejournal.com profile] barkley's page, as well. And I have recs tagged as spn on Delicious (under cofax, no 7).

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have just discovered that I can effectively friend you on Delicious (hope you don't mind) and that I have *lurkers*. Already! WTF? Teh internet works in mysterious ways, dude.

It should not be this easy to get addicted to fanfic in a new fandom.
cofax7: climbing on an abbey wall (Default)

[personal profile] cofax7 2007-03-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It was totally the fanfic that yanked me into this fandom. Well, not solely, but without the fic I think I'd just be enjoying the show, not gorging myself on painful AUs in which John lost the kids to CPS in 1984 and went to jail and Dean ended up autistic and violent in a horrible juvenile facility that Bobby had to break him out of... (That one's by Nilchance, on my Delicious recs.)

I think the thing is, that once you're used to using fic to interact with a fandom, it's that much easier to do it in the next one, and the next one. Even fandoms that maybe you're not all that attached to, because you think the show is shallow or silly or not that well-written. But if the fic is good, and there's enough of it, well, look out. You get attached to the characters through the fic instead of the show, but that carries over onto the show, and you're doomed.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-29 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, fanfic almost *makes* fandom for me. I love the people I've met, and the one's I've met I would totally lay down in traffic for, but I came and I live here for the stories. That will probably surprise no one, really.

Once you're used to using fic to interact with a fandom, it's that much easier to do it in the next one, and the next one.

*head/desk* Doomed. Doooooooooomed. Because the stuff I've read so far? Including Vehemently's? IS BRILLIANT.

It's really fun to be late to the party sometimes, though, because people are reccing already and sorting out the chaff. I remember being this starstruck entering Stargate fandom and stories ca, what, S6? S7? Something like that.... which probably means I'm extra doomed.

Awesome.

[identity profile] niamaea.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. A Minxy rec list...research paper. Rec list...research paper....

Wheee! Thank you for all the great new links to read! And for the rec of 'A million years' too -- very grateful and flattered, as always.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Deadlines are short-term, but rec lists are forever. Unless someone changes their links, or fakes their death over the internet or something. I'm not nearly that emo, though, so you're safe waiting a little while at least.

(you're welcome! Write more yay!)

thank you so much for your v. generous rec.

and all you sg-1 cool babes who are stampeding into SPN, be sure to say hi to my friend vshendria. when she finishes her "The Faculty" epic and starts writing SPN, liek woah. look out. and oh, yeah.... angstslashhope! she rocks.

it's so weird now to have been in fandom long enough that people i know are meeting other people i used to know in new fandoms. weird. like a cocktail party on six floors of a building, you know?

i heart this. hee hee.

SG-1 is my first love, just to be clear. Well, Star Trek was, actually, but I was never really fannish about Star Trek as I wasn't terribly aware of fandom at the time... I suppose SG-1 fandom is my first love, so we'll always have Paris... or something.

I'll be that social butterfly flitting between the third and fifth floors in the fabulous little red number. Yup.

You are so, so welcome. I am glad to see writing making you happy again.

Ha! I had the exact same fannish trajectory. I'll always think on Trek fondly, but SG-1 and I are in a comfortable long-term relationship now (and it doesn't mind if I look at other fandoms on occasion).

Argh! For some reason I never got the notification when you friended me! Forgive me?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-29 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness! Don't feel bad! You did awesome things and so I friended to watch to see if you would do *more* awesome things and then I took a job. Yup, no more merry unemployment and traveling the world for me, now I must behave like an adult. And move to a new city with the help of some wonderful fandom people (among others) who are trying desperately and successfully to pimp me into new shows.

So I am trying very hard to cut back on my flist. Forgive me! It's always friending amnesty day over here at casa de las Minxes, but the manic friending/defriending is purely RL motivated and pleeeeease don't feel bad! I remain absolutely convinced that you are still terribly awesome and that my flist will crow madly should you pull another devastating feat of awesomeness I should know about.

Oh yeah. I've only written full-out, no-stops femmeslash once, but [livejournal.com profile] alien_altars has tempted me to commit femmeslash once again. This time it's going to be Firefly: Zoe/Kaylee - Amnesia fic. Or Sandman/NCIS: Death/Abby (OMG GothGrrrlSlash!), but I can't figure out which cliche I should go with...so it's still up in the air. Any suggestions?

About the del.icio.us account. I love mine. I just added you to my network; it's rather small, but then, it's kind of early, yet. But it's pleasing my obsessive/compulsive librarian's soul to no end. Well, my mother was the librarian, so I think I'm actually channeling her, but I'm tagging like there's no tomorrow. I seem to have gone over the deep end, to be honest.

But then that's probably got something to do with the fact that I'm slowly importing all my firefox bookmarks into del.icio.us (long story...clean out my bookmarks...switch operating systems...can't back up my data - yadda, yadda, yuck.) But I love the importing feature - I'd hate to have to add them one at a time. And the fact that you don't have to "share" them until you're ready to make them public is an added plus for me.

I'm actually putting all the ones I haven't read yet in a different account so they don't clutter up dusty_ryder. Are you getting the idea that I'm taking this all too seriously? :::headdesk::: And of course I'm adding them as I read, so right now I'm more than a bit top heavy on Spike/Xander fic, since that's what I'm reading the most of at the moment. (Just what I need - *another* fandom!) But I'm slowly getting the other fandoms caught up, sharing them as I clean up the entry and get the tags in shape. Oi. I think I need a life.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/ 2007-03-29 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
*adds you back*

I love you just the way you are. Hee!

For me, there's a tag now called ReadMe, and those are one's I haven't vetted yet. There are still all the undiscerningly tagged fics for the newsletter that I'm slowly going through and editing, but I'm finding that I don't mind having some of the fic on there that I might not necessarily go out of my way to rec. It's interesting. I am enjoying.
