THANK YOU! What incredible f/b. I'm glad you liked Teal'c because he's becoming more and more important to me as a fan, and I signed up for the ficathon to give myself the challenge of writing him integrally into a story, not as a background character. I love about Teal'c that he has such insights into amazing things like interpersonal relationships, but has absolutely no need to voice them unless asked.
The challenge of the prompt was to write S4 (well, not exactly, but that's where I went with it) and Jack and Daniel really were obstacles to each other without meaning to be in that season. I think that's why I really really needed there to be cake, to make that the concilliatory gesture, to let them reset into friends once the danger and the fight or flight response was gone.
I needed Sam to follow orders and be a competant soldier, but I wanted her to also be Daniel's most sympathetic ally and the one who can voice how valuable Daniel is while appreciating the project. I think it's Sam that allows Daniel to think about whether saving him preferentially was the right thing to do, and not just see it as Jack's opinion that he doesn't agree with.
Plus, I wanted Teal'c to just physically be with Daniel and have Daniel recognize that comfort. I've seen it so often with people sitting by bedsides not talking. I wanted Daniel to forgive himself a little bit for watching Sha're die without fixing everything for her, because he was with her and she knew it. It's a cold comfort, of course, but it could become something he begins to stop feeling responsible for.
Season 4 oooooh, leads right up to the disconnect of season 5. And I totally wasn't supposed to spoil any seasons beyond 4, but it was impossible to write without knowing where Daniel was going on his journey. At some point, he has to forgive himself entirely in order to ascend, but still feel like he can be alone.
And that was a frigging ESSAY! Sorry... I'm in beta mode ATM. T'was fun to write the whole team, though.
