Seems like the only real wars I remember were the ones where people were fighting over campaign credit, but that was all *handwaves* metatextual stuff anyway.

Yup, and that was more generic fandom in-fighting stuff - and actually, pretty par for the course with any sort of campaigning, I think. And there was obviously all the usual "who hangs out with who" and "who gets credit for what" and "OMG X is such a BNF, s/he thinks s/he is so important, s/he is so MEAN" type stuff. Human group behaviour. But it generally didn't revolve around the content of the show.

But I don't ever remember that being a problem; it was more a matter of it just not being the archivist's cup of tea.
