multifandom recs post, mah people.

Some stunning events of the last few days have busted me out of obsessing about y'all's NaNoWriMo projects and reminded me of this stunning collection of stuff I been reading.

We shall attempt this with efficiency.

SG-1:

New from [livejournal.com profile] cofax7, which should get your attention (and what might go through your head is: brilliant gen, with amazing characterization, likely fascinating structure and amazing world-building.) Walkabout (gen, PG, SG-1) Jack, alone at the end of the world and getting past it. The world building will knock you, and the Jack characterization will knock you out. Gen. Worksafe. For [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree

Early seasons Janet and Sam friendship: Three Meetings by [livejournal.com profile] kejsarinna. Gen, worksafe.

Some recent work from [livejournal.com profile] paian: Five Things Daniel Would Do With Time Loops (pretty adorable, Jack/Daniel-ish, but worksafe) and Five TV programs that Teal'c records so he never misses an episode, which is a fantastic mix of gravitas, empathy and humor (worksafe.)

This is what happens when [livejournal.com profile] kazbaby takes on Jack and Continuum: True Blue. Good Jack voice, good Cameron voice, and an amazing idea because, yeah, paradoxes and rules be damned, SG-1 makes sure there own get the information they need to save the day. Kind of amazing that this is how easily Jack and Cam would understand one another, eh? Worksafe.

And a fantastic haunting Sam POV, releasing self-imposed restrictions and allowing new ideas for herself. The Blessing of Presence is Sam in Unending, becoming Sam/Teal'c, and how. Lovely. Worksafe, from [livejournal.com profile] princessofg.

Dr. Who/Chronicles of Narnia

Yes, okay, I know, but it totally works. Spoilers for the series of books, not just the movie, but wonderful interaction in the crossover between Susan and the Doctor. From a World More Full of Weeping. Worksafe, from [livejournal.com profile] azarsuerte.

Atlantis:

I have to caveat this one by saying I kind of wish I could beta the end, but all the points leading up to it are pretty fucking brilliant, and the Rodney voice is one of the best I've read: Or Something Like It, is John and Rodney from [livejournal.com profile] semivowel, in which truth serum (or the Pegasus equivalent of it) works shockingly well on John and doesn't wear off before the rescue arrives. Just the idea of one of the John/Rodney duo of uncommunicativeness compulsively talking about his feelings is pretty hilarious. But then when Rodney resorts to spreadsheets to solve the problem, I don't know how you manage to not snort whatever you were drinking. Not worksafe (largely due to the snorting of drinks problem, but for other reasons too.)

On the difference between pre-series Rodney and Season 5 Rodney: Rewind, Reboot, Restore. Sheppard/McKay (interrupted,) and a neat exploration of the effect people have on each other, and what shared experience does. Worksafe, from [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27.

And the kind of intimacy that allows for openness, an in-character study (through sex!) that's really sweet in a completely not-saccarine way. A Place to Stand, John/Rodney by [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle.

And for the angsty drama: future fic (if you liked Freedom's Just Another... oh, never mind) I don't know how to frame a recommendation for this story without referencing the tropes it squarely turns on it's head. It's Rodney as a parent, but not a miraculously good one. Well intentioned, yes, but this man is *flawed*, and it's more enduring than the inexplicable attraction kids seem to have for McKay. It's a future story, but not one that glories in the past. There's character death, there's loss, and this is McKay on Earth, so, but all of the explanations are so tangled and buried. This is how it truly might go. My Father Before Me. McKay/Sheppard, from the talented [livejournal.com profile] telleer, worksafe.

Comfort story back: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's New Day at Midnight, in which Rodney never considered, until he did, at which point he will claim that he knew all along. Not worksafe, and John is, oh, *John.*

Supernatural:

a crazy kind of plausible AU-genderswitch-end game from [livejournal.com profile] rivkat: Double Cross. Long and well done and plotty and fantastic, man, but not worksafe in the slightest. I think it might tweak some incest squicks, though it's not slash, and I don't even know whether you have to warn for incest in this fandom any more, but this one's hard to characterize. It's wonderous in it's messiness, though.

Merlin:

(No, I haven't seen this yet, but I totally d/l-ed the first episode and I'm going to start watching, probably. It's hard to resist y'all when you're being all squeeful about a new show. I gotta check it out!)

This is from the artist formerly known as Danvers, gen, technically, but there are shades of slash. Feels very organic, distracted, caring and oblivious. Powerful men and their illusions. Sentry, worksafe.

Firefly:

For the [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon, again (we begin and end with the apocalypse,) from [livejournal.com profile] escritoireazul, River and her ghosts. Canaries in the Mines, worksafe.

So I might mention that several of the above fics offer links to the Archive of Our Own, and that Fanlore is open in beta, allowing editing and updating. I had been watching with some mild interest as these things developed, but hadn't really been over to see what was up (after seeing the wreck of the original Stargate page, I mean really! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia for sorting out that nonesense and writing a sensible description.) So I meandered by on a pointer, and realized something that got me involved like nothing before had: there was nothing on the Teal'c character page. NOZZINK. I, er, might have spent a fair amount of time writing Teal'c backstory into his description as a result, but I burned out before I got to the fic links. I'm not sure whether people *want* to be linked, you know? But if someone wanted to finish the page, including this notion of references (really? What would you reference?) I would be really chuffed. And you can totally link to my meta or fic or whathaveyou, if you choose.

And someone should do something about the Sam page.
